What is Hot melt thread?

Hot melt thread, also known as hot melt yarn in some cases, is a specialized type of thread with unique properties and applications.

 

Characteristics

 

Melting Ability: One of the most distinctive features is its ability to melt when heated to a certain temperature. This melting temperature varies depending on the specific materials used in its production. For example, some common hot melt threads made from polymers like polyethylene may have a melting point around 130°C, while those made from more heat-resistant materials could have much higher melting points.

Adhesive Function: Once melted, it can act as an adhesive. It has the capacity to bond with other materials, which makes it highly useful in various manufacturing processes. When cooled after melting and bonding, it forms a firm connection, holding the joined materials together effectively.

Flexibility: Generally, hot melt threads maintain a certain level of flexibility even after solidifying from the melted state. This allows them to be used in applications where some degree of flexibility is required, such as in the seams of clothing or in flexible fabric composites.

Textile Industry: In clothing manufacturing, hot melt thread can be used for tasks like attaching linings to the main fabric. The thread is heated during the sewing process, melts, and then bonds the two layers together neatly. It's also applied in making seamless garments, where the thread bonds different fabric sections without the need for traditional stitching visible on the outside. In addition, it plays a role in creating decorative elements on fabrics by bonding additional fabric pieces or trims.

Non-woven Fabric Production: Hot melt thread is crucial in the production of non-woven fabrics. It helps to bind the loose fibers together. When the thread is heated, it melts and spreads among the fibers, and upon cooling, it gives the non-woven fabric structural integrity and strength. This enables non-woven fabrics to be used in a wide range of products like disposable wipes, medical masks, and filtration materials.

Footwear Manufacturing: In the footwear industry, hot melt thread is used for bonding different parts of shoes. For example, it can bond the upper part of the shoe to the sole or attach decorative elements to the shoe body. The adhesive property of the hot melt thread ensures a durable bond that can withstand the stress and strain during daily use of the shoes.

Automotive and Upholstery: For automotive interiors, hot melt thread is employed to bond fabric materials used for seats, door panels, and headliners. It helps in creating a smooth and durable finish while also ensuring that the fabric remains in place over time. In upholstery work for furniture like sofas and chairs, it's used to attach the fabric cover to the cushioning and frame, providing a neat and long-lasting bond.

 

Types

 

Based on Material: There are various types based on the polymer used. Polyester hot melt thread is popular due to its relatively good heat resistance and strength. Polyethylene hot melt thread is often chosen for its cost-effectiveness and ease of processing in some less demanding applications. Polyamide-based hot melt thread can offer excellent flexibility and durability, suitable for applications where these properties are crucial.

Based on Thickness and Strength: Different thicknesses are available to meet diverse application needs. Thicker hot melt threads are typically used when stronger bonding is required, such as in heavy-duty fabric composites or in industrial applications. Finer threads are more suitable for delicate sewing tasks or when a less visible bond is desired, like in some high-end clothing manufacturing.
