How breathable is polyester?

Polyester is generally not as breathable as natural fibers like cotton, but its breathability can vary depending on how it is manufactured and used. Polyester fibers themselves are not very breathable because they are not porous and do not allow air to pass through easily. This can result in trapping heat and moisture, making polyester garments feel less comfortable in warm or humid conditions.

However, advancements in textile technology have improved the breathability of polyester fabrics. Manufacturers can create polyester blends with other fibers or use specific weaving and knitting techniques to enhance airflow and moisture-wicking properties. For instance, polyester can be engineered to wick moisture away from the body, helping to keep the wearer dry and more comfortable. This property is particularly useful in athletic and performance wear, where breathability and moisture management are crucial.

In addition, microfibers and mesh constructions made from polyester can offer improved breathability by allowing better air circulation. These fabrics are often used in sports apparel, outdoor clothing, and other applications where breathability is essential.
