Thermo Formable Yarns

Thermo formable yarns are polymers that can be heated and formed into a variety of shapes. These fibers are made from a new polymer called Massebeuf. These yarns can be spun in a traditional textile machine and can be activated with a temperature as high as 65degC. They can also be activated using a hot water bath, hair dryer, or oven.

Thermoformable yarns are a useful resource for designing textiles with unique structural properties. For example, a 3D warp interlock fabric can be made with commingled thermoplastic yarns. Its woven geometry promotes local deformation without wrinkling. This feature makes thermoforming yarns a viable option for designing textiles that can be shaped with minimal effort.

Another example of thermo formable yarns is Grilon®, which is a thermoreactive synthetic multifilament yarn. It has a low melting point and is used in technical applications in the textile industry. These yarns are used to mold knitted fabric into a shape, as well as for edge bonding in lace. These yarns are available in several compositions, including Grilon K-85, Grilon K-110, and Grilon K-110. The first two have 68 filaments and Grilon K-110 is a one-fifteenth-nm yarn with a 100 T/M weight. The latter yarn has a length of approximately 1300 metres.

Thermoformable felts are also available. Mountain Sheep Needle Felt and DesignFelt are two examples. Once you have created your desired shape, you can then bake the felt using a heat-resistant material. Once it cools, you can replace the yarn. After the process, your thermoformed felt is durable and free of traces.
